For 23 years now, the Honda Civic has held the top spot in the Canadian car sales category. All of its rivals want to put the product that will finally dethrone it on the road.
We have bad news for them; the Civic's dominance will continue starting next year. The 2022 model, which is making its debut now, is the best in history.
Toyota had hoped to give the Civic a run for its money by redesigning the Corolla for 2020. You'll have to do it again, because even if the product is interesting, it's being outdone by the new Civic in every way.
Here are some striking examples.
When you step inside, you immediately notice a difference. While the Corolla's presentation is nice and the quality is good, the Civic's interior is more driver-oriented. All the controls are well positioned and you quickly feel at ease. The focus was on the driver when designing the model and it works.
The Civic's dashboard is visually pleasing to the eye. It's classic, but also innovative, especially with the way the air vents are integrated into a decorative strip that splits the layout in two.
On the road, the 2022 Honda Civic shows us that the numbers claiming a stiffer torsional and flexural chassis are real. You can drive this car with even more confidence on twisty roads. And on the highway, the solidity is better than ever. The balance is striking. The Corolla? Very good, but even so, you feel like you're in a lower class car with it because Honda has done so much right.
And what's under the hood only adds to that feeling. With the Civic, you get more powerful engines that work effortlessly. That's the case with the 1.5-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder that offers 180 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. At best, the Corolla's 2.0-liter 4-cylinder puts out 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque.
And with the base engine, the gap is even more striking; 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque with Honda's 2.0-litre 4-cylinder, 139 and 126, respectively, with Toyota's 1.8-litre 4-cylinder. The former works smoothly while the latter works hard to move the car.
And we could go on and on. All in all, the new Civic has everything it takes to outshine its rivals, including the Toyota Corolla. Stop by the dealership and see how convincing the Civic is.
